Shafts

What is the delivery time of polygon and splined shafts and accessories? Many items available ex-stock, otherwise between 3-5 weeks from receipt of order, depending on exact specifications.
What are the standard supply lengths of polygon and splined shafts? We stock Polygon and Splined Shafts in 3 m lengths and will cut reasonable quantities to your required length without additional charge.
What is the longest supply lengths of polygon and splined shafts?6 m. Keeping slender cold drawn shafts straight when they are this long is quite difficult. Careful handling and storage is essential.
Do you supply shafts to drawing?

Yes. Polygon and Splined components can be machined to your requirements.

Can you broach my components with polygon or splined profiles? With few reservations, the answer is yes. Some materials will not broach however.
There is a fixed set up charge per size plus a charge per component.
To which standards are the shafts made? The Polygon profile is to DIN32711.
The Spline profile is to DIN5463.
Can I machine polygon and splined shafts and their accessories?Yes. The cold drawn shaft material is soft (but heat treatable) and when held correctly can be readily machined
Do I need any special tools to machine polygon and splined shafts and their accessories? The best way of holding a cold drawn shaft is in a hub which allows you to locate off the active part of the profile.
In the case of a Spline the flank and the root, in the Polygon off the lightly radiused sides.
How straight are the shafts?Cold drawn shafts are straight to 0.3 mm/m TIR as drawn.
Factory straightening (at additional cost) reduces this to 0.1 mm/m TIR
Remember, shafts are cold drawn and are likely to "move" when machined. A straightening process may be necessary.
Can the properties of the shafts be enhanced? They can be nitrided to increase hardness to around 54-56 Rc.
How do I know whether to use polygon or splined profiled shafts?A complex subject. Each application should be judged separately.  However, where good sliding characteristics at all conditions of load are required, specify Polygon. Static positioning of drives can be accommodated using Splines.
How do I select a suitable sized shaft?

Basic torque handling capabilities per size per load conditions, are available from the catalogue.

Should I select bronze or steel components to go with the shaft?Normally if sliding is required at all conditions, select bronze. For static adjustments, steel can be used.
Can the shaft be used as supplied?Yes, after cleaning off the corrosion resisting drawing compound. No other preparation is necessary.
